She was self-supporting, bought a few very fine fashion items at the beginning of every season, and exercised daily well into her 80s. She sponsored artists, collected paintings and pre-Columbian art. When nobody would publish my mother’s dictionary of Mexican rulers, it was Toe who put up the money to print it. She became the backbone of the family when most of the men died or were absent.
