Experts are divided about whether there is actually a sugar addiction. A report declaring that sugar is more addictive than cocaine made a big splash last year but has since been disputed. One thing they all agree on is that our love of sugar does have similarities to addiction because the “sugar rush” releases dopamine, one of our feel good chemicals, and gives you a surge of energy that quickly subsides leaving you craving more. And, yes, there are withdrawal symptoms when you do a cold-turkey sugar detox. You can expect to be irritable, headachy and seriously craving a sugar fix for the first few days. The same goes for your kids, so pick a time when you can manage this without losing your minds. And remember, once you make it through the first few days, you’ll feel a million times better.
