8. What type of environment do you want for your birth?
Your birthing partner or doula can do a few simple things to make your labor and birthing experience better, such as using music, appropriate lighting and even aromatherapy to set a relaxing mood. Temperature control is another important factor for a birthing mom.
9. Conditions where episiotomy is acceptable.
An episiotomy, or a surgical incision in the perineum to open more space for the baby’s birth, is sometimes a necessary procedure. In some cases, it prevents excess tearing of the vagina and perineum. Some believe it is an overused technique and that the muscles in the perineum are capable of stretching on their own. Discuss this with your healthcare practitioner and learn more about it and how it may apply to you.
