2. To Doula or not to doula?
Doula is a Greek word meaning “servant of women.” Traditionally, a doula is a woman who assists the mother before and during childbirth, giving her encouragement, physical support, and pain management techniques. Hiring a doula is incredibly empowering because you are basically bringing someone to advocate for you and help you to honor as much of your birth plan as possible. It also gives your partner a break from massaging your feet, turning lights on and off, and changing the music. Some OBs even encourage their patients to use the services of a doula. Ask your doctor for a referral, or consult a midwife center near you for recommendations.
