Growing up looking different was not easy for Velasquez. “It was hard, I was confused. I couldn’t understand why I was picked on and why kids didn’t want to play with me.” Yet her parents raised her to believe she was as “normal” as anyone else, and taught her to stand up for herself. “Over time,” she recalls, “the other kids started to get to know me and realized I really wasn’t different.”
