1. It’s as good as running
Running is a great way to keep fit, but it’s not for everyone. “Often running is considered an ideal exercise because it’s a heart-pumping activity that you can do anywhere as long as you have a pair of sneakers,” says Mary Walters, M.Ed., a personal trainer based in Brooklyn, NY. “But the same goes for dancing!” Sure, you can boogie down at home with your favorite workout media, but dancing is something you can do anywhere, anytime—no accessories required (except, maybe, for your iPod).

2. It gets your heart pumping
You want to get your heart pumping and feel the burn—but a “traditional” exercise regimen just doesn’t appeal to you? Dancing is a fun fitness alternative. “Many styles of dance are physically demanding and target the cardiovascular system,” says Walters. If you’re interested in tracking your progress, Walters suggests using a heart monitor.
