5. It Focuses on Gender Roles and Self-Acceptance
The music video and the song’s lyrics are about the many pressures society places on individuals, especially young people, regarding their gender, and how a girl or boy is supposed to act. And it looks like Emily just isn’t OK with those pressures (we hear you girl). In the video we see Emily being pressured to wear tight clothes, have long (read: feminine) hair, imitate her mom’s look etc. And none of those looks feel true to who she is, so in the end, Emily’s message is that no one can tell her who the “f*ck to be.” After all, you need to feel comfortable in your own skin, regardless of what other people think that should look like.
