That said, even after reading several definitions and descriptions, we’re still not entirely clear on what it means to be a hipster. And according to an article in NY Mag, part of what makes a hipster so cool and so interesting is the fact that hipsters are hard to define in simple terms. It’s more than just a style, more than an attitude and more than a lifestyle. In NY Magazine, writer Mark Greif argues that “the term has always possessed adequately lucid definitions; they just happen to be multiple. If we refuse to enunciate them, it may be because everyone affiliated with the term has a stake in keeping it murky.” In other words, hipsters hate to be labeled and shoved into a neatly boxed up personality, which is part of why it can be so hard to describe them.
