In 2008, at the peak of the recession, I lost my marriage, my savings, and my steady assignments as a freelance writer and journalist in print media. I felt utterly lost. For a while, I kept looking for the same kind of work I’d done before, but as newspapers and magazines kept downsizing, I hit a wall. With two young kids in tow I had to make a living. I started applying for jobs in retail, as a restaurant hostess, even in a warehouse. But I had zero experience in any of those areas so I was virtually un-hirable. Nevermind that I was in my 40s and younger people could better adapt to those jobs.
