4. The characters may be geniuses, but you don’t have to be
Sure, the main characters are scientists and some of the humor is rooted in scientific knowledge, but you don’t have to be an intellectual to enjoy this show. The real entertainment comes from the characters—their flaws, their struggles, their personalities and their relationships. While some references might be funny if you have a background in science, there is a balance so that anyone can understand what the characters are talking about. Just as you could watch “Grey’s Anatomy” and understand any scenario even if you’re not a doctor, anyone will find “The Big Bang Theory” funny. And while some times you might be laughing at a character, more often than not, you’re laughing with them.
