6. House rules that everyone follows
“My husband jokes that I’m a dictator, but enforcing the rules in our house keeps everyone, especially me, sane,” says Meghan, stay-at-home mom to four kids. “My older kids know they need to put their dirty clothes in the hamper, and help clear the table after supper. We have a place for backpacks and jackets, sports equipment, etc. They know they have to stick to these rules.” Having order in your house, as well as setting expectations for your kids, means Mom is less frustrated and resentful at having to pick up after everyone, and it also means more quality time together as a family. Remember that the rules apply for the adults in the house, too! “We lead by example,” adds Meghan. “So if the kids can’t leave their shoes and dirty socks in the living room, then neither can my husband and I!”
