If you’re traveling by car, check all of the vitals (fluids, tires, etc.) and take care of any needed repairs. The last thing you need is a break-down in holiday traffic. Check the traffic conditions along your route before leaving the house and keep checking in along the way. If possible, map out a back-up route just in case.
As with all things in life, timing is everything. Try to plan on leaving as early as possible on Friday morning. Out of town traffic tends to be worst between 1pm and 7pm, so if you can’t leave early, plan on going after seven. Even better, if your schedule allows, consider extending your Memorial Day weekend vacation by leaving Wednesday and coming back on Tuesday. You’ll get cheaper hotels and airfare as well as fewer crowds.
