An episiotomy, or a surgical incision in the perineum to open more space for the baby’s birth, is sometimes a necessary procedure. In some cases, it prevents excess tearing of the vagina and perineum. Some believe it is an overused technique and that the muscles in the perineum are capable of stretching on their own.
