Velasquez was born premature, weighing just two pounds. Doctors told her parents she would probably not survive, but they were wrong. Today, she is one of just three people in the world known to suffer from a yet-to-be-diagnosed condition. Doctors are still trying to figure out what caused Velasquez’s condition and how it can be treated. She takes vitamins, but no other medication, in order to keep her bones strong. She eats several meals a day to avoid losing weight. She has never weighed more than 60 pounds.
