Almost all of us have had a painful ingrown toenail or two. They’re the worst! Probably the only thing more dreadful than getting one yourself is dealing with your kids’ ingrown toenails and the extensive negotiations involved in treating them. The good news is that summer footwear is ideal for giving your tootsies the breathing room they need to heal. The bad news is that you’ll be flaunting an icky ingrown toenail in your cute new sandals for a few days.

Ingrown toenails most commonly show up on big toes and they occur when the edge of your nail begins to grow into the skin. The symptoms are pain, redness and swelling. You may be tempted to grit your teeth and cut the offending nail. Don’t do it! You risk infection and it could actually lead to a worse ingrown toenail as it grows back. Foot and Ankle Associates of North Texas warns, “Repeated nail trimming in your bathroom leads to significant deformity and infection of the nail.” No thank you! BTW, this is also not a job for your pedicurist.
