The at-home ingrown toenail treatment is simple and actually quite relaxing. Just soak your feet in warm water for 15 minutes, three or four times a day. After soaking, you can gently use a nail file to hold the nail up to train it to grow flat. You can also put pieces of cotton or dental floss under the edge of the nail to keep it from growing into your skin. Then apply a topical antibiotic to prevent infection.

If you don’t see improvement in a few days, it’s time to see the doctor where they may need to remove part of your nail and give you oral antibiotics. Chronic cases may require having part of your nail bed removed too—yuck! But it sure is better than hobbling around in pain.
