The Ello social network actually launched way back in March 2014 without a lot of fanfare. It owes some of its sudden surge in popularity to Facebook’s recent crackdown on acceptable names which is forcing drag queens to use their legal names or close their Facebook accounts.

Ello is banking on the fact that people are tired of being treated like fodder for advertisers and having their social media activity tracked and sold to marketers.
