The term panini originated in Italy—panino simply means a sandwich made from bread (anything but sliced bread). The bread is cut horizontally and filled with deli ingredients such as meats, cheese and vegetables. These are different from the toasted sandwiches in Italy that are made with sliced bread and heated in a sandwich press, which are called toast. In the United States the term panini has been adopted to refer to all pressed and toasted sandwiches. Here are some tasty panini recipes that the whole family will love.
