Parks was a seamstress who, tired after working hard all day, refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama bus and move to the rear where blacks were expected to sit. She was arrested and for violating a local ordinance, but her actions were supported by a young minister, Martin Luther King, who called for a city wide boycott of the bus system.
