Rogers, of Cherokee descent, grew up in Oklahoma and worked for a time as a cowboy. He found Broadway fame in the 1920s and 30s for his folksy everyman sense of humor. He later became a columnist for the popular Saturday Evening Post, had a radio show and continued acting in movies.
