FALSE. Propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin are typically the agents used to create the ‘smoke’ for e-cigarettes. Propylene glycol is often used in fog machines, and is known for irritating some people’s airways and eyes. Vegetable glycerin is used to sweeten foods and add moisture to cosmetics. Experts consider both compounds to be safe in general but researchers don’t know if years of inhaling them could be harmful to someone using the e-cigarettes or someone inhaling the second hand smoke from them.
