Apparently, Mickey Mouse’s first words on screen were, “Hot Dog!” Even the mouse understood the value of a meaty, tasty meal served on a bun. Confession time—we serve hot dogs for dinner on a regular basis, not just at barbecues or picnics! And we know we’re not alone. According to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, “In 2012, consumers spent more than $1.7 billion on hot dogs in U.S. supermarkets alone.” There is something perfectly outdoorsy, earthy and down home about eating a hot dog. It’s just on the edge of normal and gross, and for that we applaud the dog.
Thanks to the surging popularity of food trucks and specialty restaurants that take the classics (like hot dogs) and turn them into gourmet creations, there’s a hot dog for everyone—and really no excuse to not eat one.
