GUILT-RIDDEN DAUGHTERS
My happiness is what matters. But that moment brought on so much guilt. As Latina daughters, we often feel guilty when thinking of ourselves and transitioning. Ashley Islas experienced a tough time when leaving home and breaking tradition. “I’m the youngest of three. My brother is 33 and my sister is 32 and they both live in the same town as my parents,” Islas, 23, began. “I felt like I was breaking tradition, especially in a Mexican household. I still feel like I’m missing out on ‘family time’,” she admitted. Still, just like Mami, Ashley’s mother wants to be supportive. “I think we’ve actually grown closer,” she said of her current relationship with her mother.
