When it’s done right, a surprise part can be thrilling, really special, and not at all cheesy. But how do you throw a modern surprise party without all the clichés and common pitfalls of trying to throw a fiesta behind your loved one’s back? It all starts with proper planning and enough time to do it right.

According to Dallas event planner Steve Kemble, you need a solid six weeks to plan a great surprise party. Can it be done in a month? Sure, but the real struggle will be making a guest list, inviting guests, making sure everyone can keep a secret and then rounding up any guests you are trying to bring in from far away. In addition, you want to make sure you don’t plan your party too far in advance, which just gives all of your guests more opportunities to blow the surprise. Never underestimate how bad people are at lying, and how hard it can actually be for a group of friends to keep a secret.
