The Invites (and the Guests)
When it comes to how to invite guests, opt for something brief and easily managed. Phone calls are the best way to make sure guests get the information they need directly from you, and they can’t accidentally show that message to someone who a) isn’t invited or b) is the guest of honor. Realistically, you might not be able to call everyone if your guest list is long, so a Facebook event page (which can be kept as a “secret” group) might be a better solution. Emails work too, but keep the message brief, and make sure to note that the party is a surprise. Emma Aubry Roberts for Martha Stewart Living advises that you “connect with your guests for an accurate head count, and make sure your invite bears a clear hush-hush warning.” And another rookie mistake, don’t accidentally put the guest you are trying to surprise on the email. Don’t laugh—it happens to the best of us.
