6. Soccer is not “American” enough?
When American professional sports were established, the founders made deliberate efforts to create uniquely American games. American sports were modeled on games played elsewhere: Baseball was based upon British Cricket, football was based upon rugby, and basketball was modeled after soccer. But, these games were altered to make them different from the originals. Perhaps for the majority of Americans, soccer is still considered a “foreign” game.
