Whether it’s peanut butter or education, parents want the best for their children. From meeting the teachers to participating in the PTO, parents are usually willing to invest in their child’s education as they invest in their own careers. But there are so many teaching styles out there, it’s sometimes challenging to know if our kids’ needs are being met in the classroom.

As a parent, you want to know that teachers are qualified and have your child’s best interests at heart. A 2012 Harvard study showed that having a good teacher in elementary and middle school greatly improved student’s overall long-term educational and financial outcome. Since you can’t always be in the classroom to see what goes on, here are 10 ways to gauge if there’s enough effective teaching happening for your kid.

1. Your child wants to go to school.
There are so many different types of teaching styles out there. But teachers who make education fun and welcoming have kids who want to go to school every day. If your child balks, makes up excuses to miss class (My stomach hurts.), start looking for the reason. In some cases it starts with the teacher.
