As the mother of two kids with Down syndrome, my greatest wish with the appointment of Angela Bachiller is not only for her to serve as a model of honesty and wisdom in office, but also for appointments like hers to become commonplace, and generate positive change in the way people perceive kids and adults with special needs. They deserve to have basic rights like voting, without a special hearing to demonstrate their ability to function just as well as anyone else in the voting booth.
