8. Smart Dust
If you’ve ever gone through airport security and watched them pass a piece of paper over your suitcase looking for bomb residue, you’ve seen smart dust in action. In 2003, Jamie Link was a grad student at UC San Diego when she broke a silicon chip in the lab and discovered smart dust. Smart dust particles can be designed to react with specific substances to identify a variety of chemical and biological agents.
