12. Maria Teresa Macias
Maria Teresa Macias filed 22 complaints against her husband in the eighteen months before he finally killed her and then himself in 1996. Her family filed a wrongful death suit against the Sheriff’s Department of Sonoma County, CA for denying Macias equal protection. In another landmark case, after going to trial, the Sheriff’s Department settled for $1 million.
