10. Tracy Thurman
In 1983 Tracy Thurman was stabbed 13 times by her husband and amazingly survived, although it took police 25 minutes to respond to the incident. Her landmark lawsuit against the city of Torrington, CT charging that they’re failure to protect her in spite of numerous previous complaints had violated her constitutional rights. She won a $2.3 million settlement and made huge strides towards stronger legislation.
