10. We’re afraid.
As a general rule, we live in a time of fear mongering. From the media to politicians, fear is used to guide our choices. We miss out on the opportunity to develop rational thinking skills which makes us a volatile, and often violent, people.
11. We think we’re immune.
Like a kid who thinks there’s no way they could get hurt engaging in risky behavior, we don’t think gun violence statistics apply to us. We think our neighborhood school is immune and it could never happen where we live. Stoptheshootings.org has a map that illustrates that it is indeed happening everywhere.
12. We don’t take advantage of available programs.
You may not know it, but October 19-25, 2014 is America’s Safe School Week. Many are not aware of the support available to individuals, parents and educators. And sadly we’re not taking advantage of these resources.
