7. The Big Apple Leads the Way
Workers in NYC celebrated the first Labor Day on September 5, 1882. About 10,000 of them took unpaid leave and marched from City Hall past Union Square before settling in a park for concerts, speeches and a picnic. Thus setting the standard for the rest of us with food on the lawn.
