KEEP EXPECTATIONS LOW
Asking, “Do you like John?” is a yes/no question, and puts your child in a no-win situation. Your child knows you like this person, so what is he supposed to say?
I tried to ask questions to feel out his impression of the man, but knew that the depth of my son’s answers would vary. Questions like, “So, what did you think of John?” might be met with anything from “He’s okay,” to “I dunno.” If I got lucky, he’d be able to articulate a few more items, but I was really just looking for red flags—and was open to discussing those, if they came up.
