Prior to children reading selections now, they are assessed through online reading programs or by reading aloud to an assessor, who takes a running record of how many words they pronounce correctly within a certain amount of time. Children are also asked a series of questions based on the story and recalling story elements. Through this assessment, the children are given a book that is just right for them. In one classroom, you may have a variety of children reading on different levels: Approaching, At Level or Beyond. Having a variety of literature for each reading level enables each child to read at his pace and read confidently in order to best comprehend what he is reading.
