Now, let’s fast forward to 2013. In Barcelona and other Spanish cities, St. George’s Day is April 23. And to honor the daring night and his blushing princess, the day is also Lovers’ Day, when men present red roses, presumably minus the dragon blood and chain mail, to their beloveds. It’s also a day when a lot of Spanish couples get engaged or married. Incidentally, April 23 is also El día del libro (National Book Day), so women are often presented with a rose and a book!
