1. It’s an American tradition that’s lasted for hundreds of years. But it actually started in ancient Rome. The term, ‘circus’ originally referred to a structure in Roman times where horse and chariot races were held. During the Middle Ages, horse and chariot racing declined, as other types of performances were added. Somewhere along the way, our modern concept of a circus was born.
