Here are two words that can fix almost any relationship: bear hug. The benefits of hugging are many. We hug to show love. We hug to show support and sympathy. Hugs demonstrate the joy of greeting and the sorrow at saying goodbye—that last hug at the airport which means, ‘I’ll hold you close for just a little longer and I’ll remember you when you’re gone’. Humans need to touch and embrace. It’s the primary non-verbal way we communicate.
According to MindBodyGreen, hug therapy “is definitely a powerful way of healing. Research shows that hugging (and also laughter) is extremely effective at healing sickness, disease, loneliness, depression, anxiety and stress.” So open those arms and squeeze someone with your whole darned heart!
1. Trust
Believe it or not, hug therapy creates as sense of security. As children, we leaned against our parents and felt secure with their arms around us. As adults, we still need to feel trust. Nothing says trust like allowing another person to not only touch you but to hold you in an embrace.
