Random House is rumored to have paid Dunham more than $3.7 million for her 2014 memoir and it reached #2 on The New York Times bestseller list. Although it achieved critical and popular success, there was some backlash when one passage describing childhood curiosity about her sister’s vagina led a few conservative publications to accuse her of sexually abusing her sister. Although she (and most experts) view the incident as completely normal and innocent behavior, the accusations were extremely upsetting. She also describes a sexual assault that occurred when she was in college that has resulted in a lawsuit because right-wing commentators claimed to have identified her alleged rapist and tried to disprove her story.
