Set a few unbreakable rules. One of my unbreakable rules is that no food or drink (besides bottles of water), are allowed in the bedrooms. This eliminates the possibility of disgusting dirty dishes being left to attract mice or other unwelcome guests. Establish which rules are most important to you.
