Sylvia is the co-President of her group belonging to the Quilting Guild, which has created the Sandy Project to help the victims of the Newtown, CT shooting heal. Since they started the project, members have completed 11 full-sized quilts and four child-size quilts, with more in the works. The Sandy Project quilts show the extent to which ordinary people will go to help heal a community. Guild quilters also make quilts for area hospitals.
Take a look at Brooklyn Quilt Girl and you will see many different approaches to quilt making. Recently, Hernandez learned that Sisters Jean and Miriam from Epiphany Church in Brooklyn were retiring and she asked members of the church to sign a 1½ x 3 inch piece of fabric which she then added to lap quilts she had made for the sisters to take with them as a remembrance of their time at the parish.
