BROOKLYN QUILT GIRL
The Latina mom behind the online quilt business Brooklyn Quilt Girl is one hot mama! No, not hot like that! The art quilts she crafts are being showcased in theatres, museums, all over the place…that kind of hot.
Her story is one of perseverance and success. Sylvia Hernandez graduated the High School for Art & Design in Manhattan, majoring in Illustration, but life had other plans for her. She felt fulfilled when she became a young Latina mom, but she had to set aside her artistic dreams and go to work to help support her husband and her two sons. Still, she never gave up on her creativity. When her kids were all grown up and out of the home, she started quilting. Hernandez’s interest was sparked by a quilting show produced by the Quilters’ Guild of Brooklyn. She was intrigued by all the different designs, the colors and detail of the beautiful creations she admired. When she got home, she gathered some scraps of material and started putting together her very first quilt.
