After those very lean times, the economy was in an upswing and it seemed that quilting was a dying art. Times were good and if you needed a blanket, you just purchased one at a store. But some older crafters were still quilting, quietly. In the 1970’s and 80’s the granddaughters of these older women began to take an interest in this folkloric type of art. During that period, there was great interest in anything handcrafted and the back-to-the-land movement was in full swing. Anti-materialism was the battle cry. The Bicentennial celebration of 1976 was a turning point for quilting and the granny squares became bigger and bigger and lo and behold, women (and men too) were again making quilts to express national pride.
In 2013 quilt-making is done to relax, to express creativity, to compete and to join like- minded people and share new patterns, styles and techniques.
