1. It marks the start of the New Year according to the Jewish calendar.
The Jewish calendar is different from the solar calendar (which has 365 days in a year based on the earth’s rotation around the sun) because it is a lunisolar calendar based on three astronomical phenomena: the rotation of the Earth about its axis (a day); the revolution of the moon about the Earth (a month); and the revolution of the Earth about the sun (a year). According to the Talmud (the central text in Judaism), the world was created on the first day of the Jewish month of Tishrei, and this is when this Jewish holiday is celebrated each year.
