With all the damage prolonged exposure to the sun can cause (premature aging, skin cancer, etc.) it seems faking is in and baking is out. That is, using the best self tanner versus actually tanning in the sun. On the market there are two kinds of self-tanners to choose from, those that are cosmetic bronzers that wash off like regular makeup and sunless tanners that actually stain the skin and fade as skin slough off. But are they safe? In a WebMD interview with dermatologist Robin Ashinoff, MD, of Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey, Ashinoff said that dermatologists now steer their patients toward these products if they want more color on their skin. “It’s certainly much better than going out or going to a tanning salon and getting exposed to UV light,” she added.
