preparing for baby checklist

You know how on airplanes the safety video says that in case of cabin pressure loss adults should use the oxygen mask before placing it on a child? Parents really need to hear this reminder. The arrival of a baby usually signals the moment for the parents when their needs take a backseat to their child’s. This happens with many basic things, such as nourishment, cleanliness and even having to pee. It is not unusual to see a disheveled, hungry mother holding a pristine, well-fed, bouncing baby while she herself bounces foot to foot, holding it in.

A nine-month pregnancy gives new parents some lead-time in using the oxygen mask first. Yes, it’s also time to pick out nursery furniture and wash your baby’s first set of clothes. But there will not be another time like this one to take care of yourself and the people that already make up your family once your newest and most needy member arrives. Nothing says you can’t mix it up—as you can fill your pre-baby days with both edifying and indulgent practices that are all about you. Like Gwen Stefani said of coping with early parenthood: “Meditation is my thing. But I’m not going to lie: sometimes I go into my closet and lock the door so no one can find me.” Follow this preparing for baby checklist of things to do for you.

1. Your Health
Take advantage of those monthly check-ins with your doctor to raise your awareness about your overall health. Of course, ob/gyn visits are designed to monitor the health and development of the fetus and help mom out with pregnancy symptoms, but a good doctor or midwife can answer questions about your general wellbeing. If you have underlying or pre-existing conditions, such as high blood pressure, cholesterol, thyroid issues, etc., this is an excellent opportunity to get a handle on them to ensure not only your baby’s health, but also your own.
