Mitochondria have been called the “energy factories” of cells. Mitochondrial DNA affects numerous aspects of cell development, growth, synthesis and processes. Mitochondrial abnormalities have been known to cause a range of disorders. Embryos with mitochondrial abnormalities can lead to miscarriages, stillbirths and sick babies with low survival rates.
