4. Anything above SPF 15 is just hype.
The FDA isn’t convinced, however most dermatologists agree there is a meaningful difference between SPF 15, 30 and 50—the three most widely sold levels. The sad truth is that most people are so bad at applying sunscreen that even an application of SPF 50 lotion only provides the protection of SPF 20.
5. I don’t need sunscreen on a cloudy day.
This is one of the biggest myths about sunscreen. Up to 80% of UV rays can penetrate clouds, so you can burn on a cloudy day. Add to that reflection off snow, sand and water and you’ve got the perfect recipe for a massive sunburn.
