This happens to be the same George of St. George and the Dragon fame. Somewhere in between fighting invading barbarians and refusing to crucify Christians, George took time out to save a damsel in distress, and of course, she was a princess. To save her life and her Libyan city of Selene, George slayed a dragon that had been terrorizing the town. A rose bush instantly rose and blossomed from the dragon’s blood (hey, these things happened all the time in the 4th century) and George plucked the most beautiful one and presented it to the princess.
