- In the American South it is a tradition to eat black-eyed peas with collard greens for prosperity in the New Year. (The peas are coins and the greens are cash.) But in many places in Latin America the tradition is lentils, not black-eyed peas, and you don’t always have to eat them. You can toss them right outside the house, or carry them around in your pockets (uncooked, of course!) for the day.
